Steven Stayner died in a tragic motorcycle crash on September 16, 1989, at the age of 24.

Stayner was riding his motorcycle home from work near Merced, California, when a car pulled into his path. His motorcycle collided with the vehicle, and he suffered catastrophic head injuries. He was taken to Merced Community Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred years after Steven became internationally known for surviving one of America’s most notorious child abductions. At age seven, he was kidnapped in 1972 and held captive for more than seven years before escaping in 1980. During his escape, he also helped rescue five-year-old Timothy White, another child who had been abducted.

What Happened to Steven Stayner?

On the rainy afternoon of September 16, 1989, Steven had finished his shift at a Pizza Hut in Merced and was traveling home on his motorcycle.

According to contemporary reports, a car pulled into the roadway in front of him, leading to the collision. The driver left the scene but was later identified by authorities. Steven suffered a fatal skull fracture and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Steven was only 24 years old.

Steven Stayner’s Legacy

Steven Stayner’s story remains widely remembered because of his remarkable escape from captivity. After being held by kidnapper Kenneth Parnell for seven years, Steven made the courageous decision to escape when another young boy, Timothy White, was brought into captivity.

Rather than escaping alone, Steven took Timothy with him and helped bring the child to safety.

His extraordinary story later inspired the television miniseries I Know My First Name Is Steven.

Steven’s life was tragically cut short just nine years after his escape, but his courage continues to be remembered.
